A casino (or gaming house) is an establishment for certain types of gambling. Casinos are most commonly associated with hotels, but also can be found in other types of buildings such as cruise ships and other tourist attractions. Most casinos have high levels of security and are heavily regulated. In the United States, casinos are governed by state law and may operate either as a standalone business or in conjunction with a hotel.
Most casino games involve some element of chance, but there are a number that have a significant skill component as well. Players who possess sufficient skills to eliminate the inherent long-term disadvantage of a particular game, as measured by its mathematically determined odds, are said to have an advantage over other players and are known as “advantage players”. In some games, such as blackjack or baccarat, the house takes a commission from player bets, a sum known as the vigorish. In other games, such as poker, the house collects a percentage of player bets, a sum called the rake.
